About the role
The Salem Police Department is a full-service agency offering various specialized teams. The department operates from a 104,000 square foot facility with numerous amenities for its employees. The City of Salem, located in the Willamette Valley, is the second-largest city in Oregon, with a population exceeding 180,000.
Responsibilities
- Participate in competitive testing including physical fitness, reading comprehension, writing skills, and psychological examinations.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
- Work periodic overtime and a variety of 24-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.
- Complete the Oregon Physical Agility Test (ORPAT) or equivalent.
- Pass the pre-employment background check and meet Oregon's minimum standards to work as a law enforcement officer.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old at the date of hire.
- Be a U.S. citizen or have the ability to become one within 18 months of hire.
- Pass a police department background investigation.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
- Pass the pre-employment background check.
- Meet Oregon's minimum standards to work as a law enforcement officer and background disqualifiers as outlined in OAR 259-008.
- Have a valid Oregon driver's license or equivalent, and pass a driving records check.
- Be able to work overtime and a variety of 24-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to complete departmental recruit training course and gain eligibility for Basic Certificate issued by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
- A valid Oregon driver's license or equivalent, or ability to obtain by date of hire.
- Pass the pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
- Pass the pre-employment background check.
- Meet Oregon's minimum standards to work as a law enforcement officer and background disqualifiers as outlined in OAR 259-008.
- Pass the ORPAT in 6:30 or less to pass, though DPSST requires a time of 5:30 or less for graduation.

Pay
Salary steps range from Step 1 to Step 6, with monthly rates starting at $6,779.07 and increasing to $8,912.80. Certifications, training, and college incentives are also available.
Schedule
Rotating shifts including holidays and weekends are common.
