Police Officer - Entry

Essential Functions

• Responds to calls for service, patrolling in a directed manner to deter and detect crime.
• Aids persons in trouble, provides public services, and responds to citizen complaints.
• Investigates complaints, cites and/or arrests law violators, and follows up on pending reports and cases.
• Protects persons and property, and provides traffic control assistance as necessary.
• Assists in traffic accidents, administers emergency first aid, and completes accident reports.
• Performs guard duty at hospitals and in court, and transfers prisoners to and from jail.
• Does thorough investigations of reported crimes, collects and reserves evidence, and gathers evidence.
• Interviews victims and witnesses, develops information pertinent to the investigation, and follows information to a conclusion.
• Develops street contacts to obtain information about crime, maintains contact with paroled criminals and suspects at large, and does undercover and decoy work.
• Checks known and possible stolen property outlets such as pawnshops and junkyards.
• Testifies in court and serves all proper court documents.
• Serves as Court Officer, if necessary.
• Responds to such complaints as bomb threats and takes appropriate action, including searching for hazardous material.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 21 years of age at the time of examination
• Minimum of high school diploma or GED
• Minimum of 90 quarter hours (60 semester) at an accredited college or university
• Military veterans with a minimum of 60 credits on their Joint Service Transcript (JST) will be accepted in lieu of college education
• U.S. Citizen, lawful Permanent Resident, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient
• Valid driver's license, must obtain a Washington State driver's license within 30 days of hire
• Successfully passes the following: Written Civil Service Examination, Oral Civil Service Examination, Physical Fitness Examination, Background Investigation, Polygraph Examination, Psychological Examination, and Medical Examination

• Ability to read, understand, and interpret laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations
• Ability to learn quickly applicable Federal and State Laws and City Ordinances, and established principles, practices, policies, and procedures of police work
• Ability to cope with situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights
• Ability to speak well and express oneself clearly
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diversity of people, including those with social and behavioral problems
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relations with fellow employees and with citizens from all racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds
• Ability to develop skills in the use and care of a variety of firearms
• Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as pursuing fleeing suspects on foot and arresting suspects who resist
• Ability to learn and use investigative techniques and procedures
• Ability to observe and remember details
• Ability to complete satisfactorily the prescribed courses in training at the Police Academy
