About the role

The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) seeks to hire a Police Officer to serve and protect the University community with integrity and dedication. The position offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package.

Responsibilities

  • Provide protective and law enforcement services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus.
  • Enforce state laws and county ordinances.
  • Facilitate the safe and efficient flow of traffic.
  • Complete incident reports and other necessary paperwork.
  • Conduct preliminary criminal and traffic investigations.
  • File criminal charges and testify in court.
  • Send referrals to Student Affairs as appropriate.
  • Administer first aid and assist with transportation to the University Health Center or local hospital.
  • Patrol using marked police vehicles, bicycles, or foot patrol.
  • Self-initiate proactive patrols and document activity in the CAD system.
  • Observe and report unsafe conditions and initiate corrective measures.
  • Serve as a police dispatcher in absence of regularly assigned dispatch personnel.
  • Maintain equipment logs and issue keys and equipment to authorized persons.
  • Answer incoming phone calls requesting assistance and/or information.
  • Assist visitors and University employees with directions to buildings, classes, and departments.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as delivering emergency messages, collecting lost and found items, conducting daily patrol vehicle safety and cleanliness inspections, and delivering reports and documents to and from the Coral Gables Police Department.
  • Provide escorts for students, faculty, and staff upon request, primarily during nighttime hours.
  • Work special duty assignments during University-sponsored functions, athletic events, and student social activities.

Qualifications

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the state of Florida, having successfully completed an FDLE-approved academy.
  • Must not have more than 5 moving traffic citations resulting in a guilty plea.
  • Must possess a minimum of 54 college credits, or at least 3 years of military service or prior law enforcement experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in the safe use, handling and maintenance of firearms, other weapons, and related law enforcement equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Willingness and ability to work assigned shifts in a 24/7/365 operational environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly, calmly, and effectively.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Physical capability and knowledge of defensive tactics to safely restrain and subdue suspects.
  • Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, while respecting the rights of others.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to access situations quickly and determine appropriate actions.
  • Ability to recognize and identify criminal activity.
  • Skill in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to apply Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) techniques when assisting people in distress.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and communicate critical information to supervisors promptly.
