Job Summary

Kind of Work Journeyman mechanic work involving a variety of makes and models of trucks and heavy road maintenance equipment. Distinguishing Features of Work An employee in this class performs difficult and skilled mechanical work in the repair of heavy equipment. The employees are expected to plan their work and make decisions within established policy. However, the work is performed under general supervision and is subject to inspection while in process and upon completion.

Work Environment

• Constant: Near and midrange vision; color vision; and right and left wrist turn.
• Frequent: Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; far vision; depth perception; field of vision; hear; balance; bend neck; climb ladders; crawl; crouch; feel; use fingers; grasp; handle; kneel; move about; reach; reach above shoulder; recline; rotate neck; sit; squat; stand; stoop/bend; walk; extreme noise; vibration; mechanical and electrical hazards; burns; moving objects; work with and around others; work inside; and drive.
• Occasional: Lift and carry over 100 pounds; maintain posture; static neck position; talk/speak; twist at waist; exposure to weather; extreme heat, cold, wet/humid conditions; confined spaces; atmospheric conditions; elevated and slippery surfaces; traffic; work alone; and work outside.

Selection Process

• Completion of a vocational training course in Diesel Mechanics and Heavy Equipment Maintenance and one year of full-time paid experience as a heavy equipment mechanic;
• Three years of full-time paid experience as a heavy equipment mechanic;
• Work experience as a heavy equipment mechanic may be substituted for formal training on the basis of two years of full-time paid experience for one year of formal training;
• A Class ‘B’ Commercial Driver's License without an airbrake restriction and proof of possession of a Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver's License without an airbrake restriction with a tank vehicle endorsement within six months of employment.

Failure to obtain a Class ‘A’ within six months will result in termination from the position.
