About the role

The City of Roanoke seeks individuals to perform responsible Police protective service work. Duties involve an element of personal danger. Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, associate’s degree in social or police science, and a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned beats on foot, motorcycle, bicycle, or in patrol car.
• Control traffic, prevent crime, or maintain peace.
• Respond to calls and complaints.
• Aid persons in distress.
• Make arrests.
• Investigate crimes and testify in court.
• Direct traffic and report unsafe conditions.
• Prepare detailed reports.
• Recover stolen and lost property.

Requirements

• Must be 21 years old by the start of the academy training.
• Pass a drug screening and polygraph test.
• Have a valid driver’s permit from Virginia.
• Have corrected vision of 20/30 in the better eye, 20/40 in the worse eye, or corrected to 20/30 or greater in the better eye and 20/40 or greater in the worse eye.
• Be free of disqualifying vision issues.
• Bilingual Spanish/English speakers encouraged to apply.
• Work shifts including nights, days, and weekends.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or equivalent from a community college or technical school in social or police science.
