About the role
The Police Lieutenant assists in managing operations for the University Police Department. This position is responsible for supervising law enforcement personnel, developing policies and training programs, enforcing university and state laws, managing special events, and serving as a liaison with internal partners and external agencies.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a unit representative and point of contact with law enforcement agencies, institutional work units, news media, social services, and special interest groups.
- Develops and communicates directives to staff and monitors compliance with rules and regulations.
- Schedules logistics and resources to protect life and property, and the preserve peace and good order, and provide emergency aid to the institutional community.
- Organizes and conducts crime prevention training programs to promote public awareness of crime risk and prevention methods.
- Prepares and presents evidence in civil and criminal court and university proceedings.
- Reviews and approves officer reports on incidents and criminal investigations.
Requirements
- Internal Candidates: Must have at least one year of service at the rank of Sergeant from within the University of Mississippi Police Department to be eligible for promotion. Candidates that were hired at the rank of Sergeant must have four continuous years of service with The University of Mississippi Police Department to be eligible for promotion.
- External Candidates: Verifiable supervisory experience at the Lieutenant level or above for a minimum of two (2) years.

- Ability to enforce laws, investigate complaints and incidents, maintain order, identify criminal activity, and apprehend and arrest offenders
