Police Lieutenant

This class is the fourth level in a five-level Sworn Police Series. Incumbents provide direction and supervision for an assigned unit within the department.

Responsibilities

• Plans, organizes, oversees, and evaluates the daily operations of an assigned unit; conducts shift briefings to provide communication updates; ensures compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
• Supervises staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff training, enforcing policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
• Conducts in-service training.
• Responds to and resolves sensitive public inquiries or complaints; provides public safety information, law enforcement updates, and related departmental communications. May respond to media inquiries.
• Reviews submitted reports and documentation for accuracy and completeness; ensures maintenance of required documentation.
• Contributes to the development and implementation of policies and plans in support of departmental operations. May serve as command during critical incidents.
• Assists in the development and management of assigned operating budgets; approves expenditures and recommends budgetary adjustments.
• Assists in planning and implementing special training programs. Oversees maintenance of equipment inventory and/or fleet requirements.
• Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned to support departmental success.
• Subject to 24-hour recall: may be required to work overtime, including during emergency situations (natural or man-made disasters). May be required to perform services or duties outside the normal scope during emergencies or evacuations.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or 30 college credit hours in Criminal Justice or a related field and five (5) years of Police Sergeant-level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Texas Driver's License.
• Advanced Certification from the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCOLE).
• Supervisory Training Certification from the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCOLE).

Physical Demands

• Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
• Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• May be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises, travel, and environmental conditions such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment.
