Police Dispatcher
About the role
This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, law enforcement, and security operations, linking those in need of assistance to those who render assistance. The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College.
Responsibilities
- Dispatcher position is responsible for the public safety at a multi-campus college.
- Responsible for receiving calls for service and dispatching resources.
- Process requests for service by telephone and in person.
- Maintain computerized daily communications logs.
- Work rotating shifts and be designated as “essential” requiring reporting during holidays and emergencies.
- Pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
- May be required to assist the agency or state government in emergencies.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successfully pass a telecommunications assessment.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident for 10 years.
- Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.
Qualifications
- Ability to successfully complete initial DCJS approved dispatcher/communications training.
- Ability to acquire and maintain NCIC/VCIN Level A operator certification.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform with minimal supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task various job functions.
- Handle stress under emergency situations.
- Good computer skills.
- Typing ability of at least 30 words per minute.
Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols.
- Computer literacy.

The starting pay range for this position is $55,000 per year.
