Pay

Recruitment range: $57,583–$86,375.

Schedule

• Full-time, 12-month position.
• May work a 12-hour fixed shift (days or nights) or a traditional 40-hour Monday–Friday work week, as assigned.
• Evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.
• Subject to emergency call-back on short notice.

About the Role

The Police Corporal serves in the University Police department to protect and serve students, faculty, staff, and visitors through law enforcement and crime prevention. This role acts as an assistant supervisor, managing schedules, reinforcing work expectations, providing guidance, directing resources, evaluating performance, and conducting shift briefings.

Responsibilities

• Serve as acting supervisor in the absence of the Police Sergeant.
• Respond to and investigate crimes and accidents.
• Perform patrol operations, administrative tasks, training, and specialized roles as assigned.
• Assist with supervision, including officer and scene management, report reviews, policy interpretation, and equipment inspections.
• Uphold local, state, and federal laws.
• Conduct yearly performance evaluations.

Requirements

• Minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 2 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.
• Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or eligibility for certification within an agency-specified timeframe.
• For lateral hires, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification may be accepted at the hiring authority’s discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current NC CJETSC certification as a commissioned police officer.
• Associate degree or higher.
• Two years of campus law enforcement or School Resource Officer experience.
• Five or more years as a law enforcement officer with supervision experience.
• Experience in a higher education environment.
• Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software.
• Familiarity with law enforcement and university technology (e.g., DCI, NCIC, eWarrants, eDiscovery, CJLEADS, Maxient, Banner, records management systems, security camera systems).
• Knowledge of the Clery Act.

Skills

• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to function under pressure or in crisis situations.
• Proficiency in handling confidential information.
• Experience addressing diverse environments and establishing effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community partners.
