Podiatrist (GEC/HBPC Medical Director)

About the Role

The Home Base Primary Care (HBPC) Medical Director is the senior clinician responsible for the overall medical care delivered by the HBPC team at the Thomas E. Creek VA Health Care System. This role involves clinical oversight of all HBPC services in Amarillo and satellite programs, collaboration with the HBPC Program Director, and potential academic involvement with affiliated medical schools, residency, and fellowship programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, including assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome measures of healthcare problems in the home setting and other departments within the Geriatric and Extended Care (GEC) Service line.
• Initiate and adjust therapeutic regimens, perform histories and physicals, order diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, initiate consults and referrals, and prescribe medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy, formulary, federal/state regulations, and scope of practice.
• Supervise licensed independent practitioners (LIPs), residents, fellows, and medical students.
• Lead and direct HBPC development and programs, ensuring effective interface with HBPC staff.
• Participate in all accreditation processes, reviews, and site visits.
• Collaborate with in-house specialty clinics and community providers.
• May hold a faculty appointment and engage in academic activities.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• Degree as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (or equivalent) from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are U.S. schools approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year the degree was granted.
• Completed (or currently completing) residency training (or equivalent) approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include:
  • Those approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (accrediting body for graduate medical education) in the year the residency was completed.
  • Other residencies or training experiences deemed equivalent by the local Professional Standards Board.
• Currently hold (or will hold) a full and unrestricted license to practice podiatry in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• VA podiatrists in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.

Preferred Experience:

• Fellowship-trained in Geriatrics.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Geriatrics.
• Experience working with the Geriatric Veteran population across various clinical settings, including clinics, nursing homes, home care, and consultative practice.
• Experience in Hospice and Palliative care.
