About the role
The Cook position at Catholic Charities is responsible for preparing and directing others in all aspects of meal preparation, maintaining an efficient and nutritious food service program, and supporting the shelter's operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and/or directs others in all aspects of meal preparation.
- Executes and maintains an efficient, economical and nutritious food service program for the shelter.
- Receives and supervises the food donations and makes arrangements for the storage of food products and other materials necessary to the food service operations.
- Aids in food production and presentation of daily menu items and special events.
- Maintains the highest standard of quality in the production of the daily meals.
- Maintains kitchen sanitation and safety regulations.
- Maintains proper costing of needed raw materials.
- Maintains portion control, waste management, and appropriate inventory levels.
- Oversees and assists in training of volunteers.
- Supports the food service coordinator in negotiating competitive pricing of needed goods and services from established vendors.
- Supports, promotes, and adheres to Catholic Charities' vision, mission, values, and Code of Ethics.
- Maintains confidentiality of client and agency information.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Uses creativity and innovation in program development and service delivery.
Requirements
- Institutional and restaurant experience as well as a good working knowledge of commercial food preparation and production standards including sanitation safety standards.
- Good working knowledge of all commercial grade kitchen equipment.
- The ability to function independently and maintain self-sufficiency with minimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, flexibility, and willingness to shift priorities as needed.
- Knowledge of the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and the appropriate techniques and practices for the client population.
- Ability to interact effectively as a team member and independently with Agency staff and with a diverse client base.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands
- Regularly stands, walks, sits, and reaches with hands and arms.
- Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
- Works in a commercial kitchen with some extremes in temperatures.
- Works in a noisy environment.
Work Environment
- Performs work in a commercial kitchen, with some extremes in temperatures.
- Travel: Minimal within local area.
