About the role

The City of Worcester is seeking a Plumbing and Gasfitting Inspector for the Building and Zoning Division within the Inspectional Services Department. Under the direction of the Chief Plumbing & Gas Inspector, this position inspects new and existing plumbing installations to enforce conformity with municipal ordinances, state laws, and accepted practices. The role requires independent judgment and considerable technical discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect new and old plumbing installations for compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Enforce municipal ordinances, state laws, and accepted practices related to plumbing installation, maintenance, alteration, repair, and removal.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, and drawings used in plumbing work.
  • Detect faults or defects in materials and workmanship during inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Utilize electronic management software and digital work order processes.
  • Enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Supervise the work of journeymen and master plumbers.
  • Interact professionally with department employees and the public.
  • Make sound, accurate decisions quickly.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current and valid journeyman or master plumber’s license issued by the Massachusetts Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters.
  • Five years of continuous practical experience as a master or journeyman plumber immediately preceding appointment.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Regular onsite attendance is required.

Qualifications

  • Required Knowledge and Skills:
    • Principles and theory of plumbing.
    • Terminology, codes, symbols, and standard abbreviations used in plumbing work.
    • Applicable local and state codes and regulations related to plumbing.
    • Safety practices and precautions in plumbing work.
    • Methods and techniques for inspecting and testing plumbing systems.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Proficiency in using electronic management software and digital work order systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associate’s degree or a Master’s Craftsman knowledge level in a professional field or trade.
    • Five years of prior work experience as a Plumber or in a related field.
