Plumber III
Job Summary
We are currently filling two Journeyman Utility Plumbing positions that play a critical role in supporting campus-wide utility operations. These roles involve hands-on work across a broad range of utility systems. A major component of the position is water distribution, which requires a Distribution Grade 4 Water Operator license. Candidates who do not currently hold this certification will be expected to obtain one with DDW and RURAL water associations.
Responsibilities
- Assembles pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
- Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
- Caulks leaks and opens clogged drains.
- Installs sinks, showers, toilets, water heaters and related plumbing fixtures.
- Reviews blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
- Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Estimates time and material costs on plumbing projects.
- Requisitions new plumbing supplies and equipment.
- Holds a plumber's license.
- Perform work under minimal supervision.
- Handle complex issues and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group.
- Communicate professionally and appropriately with all University faculty, staff and students when and however needed.
Qualifications
- Plumber, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
- Previous certification as a water system operator.
- Experience in O/M with site utilities.
- Knowledge in running a jetter for drain cleaning and maintenance.
- Having a current certification in Water Distribution Grade 4.
- Backflow certification.
- A clean driving record.
- A strong, internal desire to help the University of Utah accomplish its mission.

Work Schedule Summary: This position operates on a standard schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Following an introductory period, an alternative schedule of (4/10s) may be available. Employees in this role are required to participate in an on-call rotation, typically in 14-day intervals. On-call responsibilities involve responding to plumbing-related emergencies on campus outside of regular working hours. Work schedule may be adjusted as needed to accommodate specific Projects or meet the operational needs of the University.
