About the Team and Role

We are seeking a dedicated Platform Engineer with five or more years of experience to join our Platform Engineering group at the Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC). Our team is responsible for building, managing, and modernizing critical systems infrastructure. We provide cutting-edge Kubernetes containerization and virtualization solutions designed to support both modern architecture and legacy systems.

In this role, you will be at the forefront of our infrastructure modernization efforts, ensuring our platforms are scalable, secure, and highly available. You will work heavily with Kubernetes, GitOps workflows, and automation tools to empower developers and support critical operations—including emerging in-house AI initiatives. This is a terrific opportunity to apply your technical skills to NASA's historic efforts, including sustaining operations on the International Space Station (ISS) and powering the Artemis program—which is sending humans back to the Moon and laying the foundation for Mars exploration. Be part of the team in Huntsville, Alabama—the Rocket City—driving advancements in human spaceflight and helping shape the future of exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Management: Build, deploy, and manage Kubernetes infrastructure across multiple distributions, including OpenShift, Charm Kubernetes, and AWS EKS/OpenShift.
  • GitOps & CI/CD: Architect and build Kubernetes solutions using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) techniques, utilizing ArgoCD and Argo Workflows for continuous delivery and GitLab for CI/CD pipelines.
  • Platform Tooling: Manage, maintain, and optimize core infrastructure tools such as GitLab, Red Hat Satellite, and Prometheus/Grafana to support both modern and legacy environments.
  • Troubleshooting & Support: Act as an escalation point to troubleshoot complex, Kubernetes-based issues and provide operational support for legacy Linux and Windows virtualization solutions.
  • Architectural Guidance: Design and provide robust Kubernetes-based architectural solutions as project requirements evolve.
  • AI Infrastructure Support: Support and maintain infrastructure for in-house Artificial Intelligence efforts based on Red Hat AI on OpenShift and Poolside.ai.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent comparable experience).
  • Proven hands-on experience with Kubernetes distributions, specifically OpenShift, Charm Kubernetes, EKS, and OpenShift in AWS GovCloud.
  • Strong administration skills in Linux environments (Red Hat/RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian, Windows).
  • Fluent in essential command-line tools including oc, kubectl, virtctl, and standard Linux CLI utilities.
  • Experience with AWS Cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong experience with GitOps methodologies using Visual Studio Code, GitLab, and ArgoCD. Proficiency in configuration management using Ansible.
  • Experience with OpenShift Virtualization.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and managing Prometheus/Grafana, Loki logging stacks, and Splunk (log collection and analysis).

Skills

Preferred Qualifications: While not required, experience in any of the following areas will strengthen your application:

  • Advanced Kubernetes & Containers: Advanced Cluster Management (ACM), Advanced Cluster Security (ACS), Red Hat CoreOS administration, LXC containers, and LXD ecosystems.
  • Red Hat Virtual Machine Migration tool.
  • Canonical Tooling: Juju and Charm experience.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Helm, and Kustomize.
  • Networking & Ingress: Traefik, MetalLB, Multicast Networking, NMSTATE, Multus, and HAProxy router sharding.
  • Hypervisors & Infrastructure: Proxmox administration/design, Broadcom administration, and AWS GovCloud.
  • Messaging & Event Streaming: Kafka and NATS (microservices messaging).
  • Identity & Security: PIV-M authentication, OIDC, KeyCloak, and LDAP integrations.
  • AI GPU and model tuning: Fine-tuning GPUs on AI worker nodes.
  • AI Platforms: Familiarity with Red Hat AI, Poolside.ai, GPU utilization and tuning, and elements of an AI stack (inference, modeling, Harness implementation, user interfaces).

Clearance & Eligibility

Must be eligible and able to successfully obtain a NASA Position of Trust.
