Job Summary
The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Plant Utilities Assistant. Plant Utilities Assistants perform semiskilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning, and electrical distribution under direction of Plant Utilities Engineers in various State agencies.
- Maintains equipment consoles and reads, analyzes, and follows up on console readings, charts, and trouble calls.
- Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunctions.
- Fills out plant logs and incident and Quality Assurance Reports.
- Advises supervisors when repairs are required.
- Receives and distributes fuel supplies.
- Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC systems.
- Uses specific chemicals to treat water in HVAC systems.
- Cleans strainers, coils, and steam traps.
- Changes filters and regenerates water softeners.
- Installs, removes, and washes window air conditioners.
- Determines if refrigeration systems are low on refrigerant and prepares them for charge.
- Performs minor repairs such as replacing worn gaskets, changing belts, and tightening joints.
- Performs semiskilled plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration work under supervision.
- Determines if water regulator valves need rebuilding or repair.
- Threads, sells, or glues and installs pipe.
- Re-packs pumps and valves.
- Assists in monitoring and operating building management or automation systems, and energy management systems.
- Cleans mechanical rooms.
- Responds to calls during night shifts, weekends, or holidays to troubleshoot and make necessary repairs.
- Provides instruction to Facility Operations Assistants 1 (Utilities) and other labor class positions on routine jobs and equipment inspections.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $45,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
Schedule
The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Night shift coverage may be required occasionally.
