Typical Tasks

The Database Administrator is responsible for creating database structures designed to consolidate conceptual, logical, and physical models of data stored by the department, and performing duties to improve the quality, accuracy and integrity of the information and shared data resources. In addition, the individual selected will document and communicate changes in database models, review data models developed by other information systems professionals and recommend modifications. The incumbent will also participate in systems analysis, design, and implementation, and monitor database performance and respond to system problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in information systems, computer science or a closely related field.
  • Experience: Four years of full-time experience (or the equivalent of full-time experience) performing database administration and/or computer programming analyst duties. Two years of the required experience must have included database administration duties.
  • Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

Selection Process

  • Application Filing: A completed Contra Costa County employment application and supplemental questionnaire must be received or postmarked by February 24, 2006. Resumes may not be substituted for the official application and supplemental questionnaire, but can be attached.
  • Examination: The examination will consist of an evaluation of relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire. Candidates will receive a rating of 70 for meeting the minimum qualifications. Additional points will be awarded to those candidates who possess related education, training and/or experience beyond the minimum qualifications.
