We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team in a temporary Plans & Permits Technician role. This position is an opportunity to make a daily difference by ensuring responsible growth and development in Wake County.

About Our Team

The Wake County Planning & Development Services Department ensures that growth and development are managed responsibly, preserving the outstanding quality of life for all residents. As Wake County's population and economy grow, the department serves as the leading resource for administering land development regulations, guided by the County’s Unified Development Ordinance, Comprehensive Plan, Stormwater Regulations, and North Carolina Building Code.

The department includes work groups focused on building permitting and inspections, stormwater, watershed management, planning, and zoning. It also convenes stakeholders—such as regional agencies for transportation, stormwater, and watershed management—to advance land development projects. Community engagement and stakeholder feedback are critical to the department’s planning processes, and team members are skilled in outreach and engagement practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service to residents and internal staff members.
• Understand and interpret various types of permits.
• Review site plans, recorded maps, and conduct deed research.
• Utilize PC functions and standard MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Prioritize time and tasks to achieve daily work assignments.
• Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Requirements

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in the construction industry and/or customer service.
• Equivalent education and experience are accepted.

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Experience working in a permitting office and/or call center.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Pay

• Hiring Range: $25.70 - $28.83 per hour.
• Market Range: $25.70 - $31.96 per hour.

Schedule

• Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
