Planning & Engineering - Zoning Officer

About the role

The Township of East Brunswick is accepting applications for the regular, full-time position of Zoning Officer in the Department of Planning & Engineering. Under the general supervision of the Director of Planning and Engineering, the Zoning Officer will serve as an administrative officer for the Zoning Board.

Responsibilities

• Performing technical and professional work in the interpretation, drafting, and enforcement of Township zoning laws, ordinances, rules, Master Plan elements, and regulations.
• Reviewing and signing off on building permits for zoning compliance and licenses for the Clerk's office.
• Issuing Zoning permits for fences, sheds, impervious surfaces, and signs.
• Responding to letters of intent and OPRA requests.
• Handling inquiries from the public on development and zoning matters.
• Attending evening Zoning Board Meetings.
• Performing related work as required.

Qualifications

• Two years of municipal zoning experience for applicants with a Master's degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field; or
• Four years of municipal zoning experience for applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, or related field.

Knowledge and skills

Knowledge of:

• The principles, practices, and techniques of municipal zoning, site planning, and land use procedures.
• The local, state, and federal laws and other regulations governing land use and zoning.
• The legal procedures related to the enforcement of zoning laws and ordinances.

Ability to:

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with township personnel and the public.
• Provide excellent communication and conflict resolution skills to assist the public in a courteous and effective manner.
