Planning Administrator

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, guidance, mentoring, and technical support to planning staff.
  • Assist with the administration and daily operations of the Planning Division.
  • Review and oversee complex development applications, including rezonings, comprehensive plan amendments, site plans, conditional uses, variances, and subdivision plats.
  • Ensure planning projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Prepare and review staff reports, recommendations, presentations, and planning studies.
  • Present recommendations before Planning & Zoning Boards, City Councils, County Commissions, and other public bodies.
  • Coordinate with developers, consultants, engineers, architects, elected officials, and the public throughout the development review process.
  • Assist with updates to comprehensive plans, land development regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Support departmental strategic planning, budgeting, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Resolve complex planning issues while maintaining exceptional customer service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of land use planning, zoning administration, comprehensive planning, and land development regulations.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with staff, developers, consultants, elected officials, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong conflict resolution and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of GIS, permitting software, and development review systems is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Education, Certifications, & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a closely related field required.
  • Master's degree in Planning or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible planning experience, including complex development review and zoning administration.
  • Previous supervisory, lead, or team leadership experience required.
  • Experience presenting before Planning & Zoning Boards, City Councils, County Commissions, or similar public bodies.
  • Experience in municipal planning, community development, or planning consulting preferred.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification preferred.
