Planner I – Planning

About the role

The Planner I performs professional work in County planning and development. Essential Functions include conducting research on proposed planning projects, County ordinances, and State and Federal regulations; processing applications and entering them into the applicable database; tracking and maintaining planning projects; preparing public meeting agenda and minutes; drafting and producing public notices; writing updates to County ordinances; preparing reports and graphic display materials; preparing staff reports for the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals; assisting with public meetings and public hearings; responding to public inquiries; serving as a planner for the Florence Area Transportation Study; assisting in the zoning division as needed; assisting in the Lake City satellite office as needed; attending meetings, seminars, and conferences as appropriate; performing various clerical duties.

Responsibilities

• Conducts research on proposed planning projects, County ordinances, and State and Federal regulations related to planning, zoning, and land development.
• Processes applications and enters them into the applicable database.
• Tracks and maintains planning projects as they move from staff level to Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and County Council.
• Prepares public meeting agenda and minutes.
• Drafts and produces all applicable public notices related to planning activities.
• Writes updates to County ordinances related to planning, zoning, and land development.
• Prepares reports and graphic display materials based on research and recommendations.
• Prepare staff reports for the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
• Affords assistance during public meetings and public hearings as required.
• Responds to public inquiries related to items appearing before Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and County Council.
• Serves as a planner for the Florence Area Transportation Study and assists with transportation planning and data collection.
• Assists in the zoning division as needed.
• Assists in the Lake City satellite office as needed.
• Attends meetings, seminars, and conferences as appropriate.
• Performs various clerical duties as necessary, including but not limited to typing, copying, filing documents, answering the telephone, mailing notices, scheduling meetings, etc.

Requirements

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in city and regional planning, economics, engineering, or public administration supplemented by one to two years of planning experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Qualifications

• Frequently required to perform basic physical activities and communicate effectively to carry out essential job duties.
• Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move, and lift 10 lb. objects regularly.
• Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.

Skills

• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.
