About the role

The position involves supporting NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Population & Ecosystems Monitoring Division (PEMD) with plankton surveys. This is a contractor position working at the SEFSC Laboratory in Pascagoula, MS, and may involve working on NOAA ships, charter vessels, and small boats.

Responsibilities

  • Resource Surveys: Participation in large vessel plankton surveys and other resource surveys as needed. Duties include, but are not limited to, those of a Survey Field Party Chief, Survey Watch Leader, or Survey Watch Stander.

  • Laboratory Support: Identification and analysis of plankton samples, including morphometric characteristics, displacement volume measurements, manual sorting, and specimen counting. Data management and preparation of samples for shipping.

  • Data Management Support: Data entry, editing, verification, and updates. Preparation of data summaries and reports.

  • Scientific Meetings: Preparation and presentation of abstracts and publications related to plankton research.

  • Outreach and Education: Participation in public outreach and educational events.

Requirements

  • Level II: MS Degree in Marine Science or related field, or BS Degree in Marine Science or related field with 3 years of relevant experience.

  • Level III: MS Degree in Marine Science or related field, or BS Degree in Marine Science or related field with 3 years of relevant experience, plus desirable qualifications.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of marine plankton research and identification of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton.

  • At-sea experience and ability to work on extended research survey cruises.

  • Proficiency in using marine plankton identification tools and computer software.

  • Ability to write reports and make oral presentations.

  • Experience with SEAMAP field sampling protocols and Scientific Computing System (SCS).

  • Knowledge of statistical treatment of marine plankton and oceanographic data.

Benefits
