Responsibilities

  • Measuring and configuring pipe routes.
  • Gathering material and installation tools.
  • Digging trenches using hand and machine trenching tools.
  • Locating installed piping systems using magnetic or radio indicators.
  • Removing old or broken piping systems.
  • Laying pipes into trenches and applying pipe spacers.
  • Checking pipe alignment and sealing pipes with cement glue.
  • Installing auxiliary lines.
  • Sealing exposed pipe joints and fittings.
  • Filling and sealing pipe trenches.
  • Monitoring site safety compliance at all times in conjunction with Metcon Safety Director.
  • Participating in site safety meetings with Metcon Field Staff and applicable Subcontractors on a regular basis and as needed.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven work experience as a Pipe Layer.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe fitting techniques.
  • Knowledge of sewer systems, storm drains, and water mains.
  • Experience with machine-operated trenching tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and city maps.
  • Excellent physical fitness with the ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license (travel is required).

Physical Duties

  • Digging and Trenching:
    • Manual excavation using shovels and other hand tools.
    • Assisting with or guiding the operation of excavators, trenchers, and backhoes.
  • Handling and Installing Pipes:
    • Lifting and carrying heavy pipes (concrete, PVC, or metal).
    • Aligning and positioning pipes for tight fits.
    • Sealing joints using adhesives, seals, or welding.
  • Backfilling and Compacting Trenches:
    • Shoveling and spreading dirt or gravel to fill trenches.
    • Using mechanical compactors to pack soil and prevent settling.
  • Operating Hand and Power Tools:
    • Using pipe cutters, saws, levels, welding, or soldering equipment.
  • Working in Confined Spaces:
    • Bending, kneeling, or squatting in narrow trenches or deep holes for extended periods.
  • Enduring Various Weather Conditions:
    • Working outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, or humidity.
  • Maintaining Balance and Coordination:
    • Working on uneven terrain, including trenches and construction sites.
  • Climbing and Working at Heights:
    • Climbing ladders or scaffolding to access pipe installation or repair areas.
