About the role

With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, Ingalls has designed, built, and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. As the largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, the shipyard simultaneously builds four classes of ships and has pioneered technologically advanced, highly capable vessels for decades.

As a Skilled Pipefitter, you help build the critical piping systems that bring our nation’s most advanced ships to life — from fuel and steam systems to hydraulics, ventilation, and climate control. Your work ensures every vessel operates safely, reliably, and at peak performance. Since 1938, Ingalls pipefitters have helped build nearly 70 percent of the U.S. Navy fleet, supporting ships that protect our nation and operate around the world for decades.

  • Fit and install piping systems made from materials such as steel, galvanized pipe, copper, copper‑nickel, and stainless steel.
  • Install valves, fittings, and components following drawings, arrangements, and blueprints.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment to ensure proper fit, alignment, and installation.
  • Work in a shipyard environment that may include heights, tight spaces, and changing weather conditions.
  • Support production across multiple shifts as needed to meet ship construction schedules.
  • Follow Ingalls’ strong safety standards in every task and work area.

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and system layouts.
  • Skill in fitting and installing a variety of piping materials and components.
  • Strong focus on safety, quality, and teamwork.

Nice to have:

  • 3 or more years of marine, shipbuilding, and construction experience.
  • Experience in layout, fit‑up, fabrication, and installation of pipe, flanges, and valves.
  • Ability to read and interpret trade drawings and/or blueprints utilizing both metric and standard measurements.
  • Experience in setting and erecting units with proficiency in the use of datum lines.
  • Familiarity with fit‑up, alignment tolerances, and advanced blueprint reading skills.
