Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to the required work area.
- Operate Loader controls to lower and tilt buckets and drive forward to force bucket into the bulk material.
- Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
- Operate Loader on public or private roadways, maintaining proper awareness of one’s surroundings.
- Transport aggregate or other materials in a safe and precise manner
- Maneuver loader and other heavy equipment safely on public or private roadways
- Loading, delivery, and dumping of materials in a safe and timely manner
- Move lever to raise and tilt bucket when filled, or to dump material
- Maintain cleanliness and good condition of trucks
- Perform daily inspections and safety checks on equipment; reports defects and repairs
- Perform minor maintenance to include cleaning, lubricating and refilling equipment
- Check fluid levels, maintain tires pressures and change implements or attachments
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Work closely with ground crew to achieve project objectives
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations, their capacities and physical limitations, and issues involving ground disturbance
- Safe driving abilities and strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures
- Able to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills
- Effective communications with jobsite supervisor and co-workers
- General knowledge of road construction processes
- Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures
- Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
- Able to work nights and weekends when necessary
- Must have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksites
Physical Demands
- Constant physical effort, including extended sitting for at least 8 hour shift
- Intermittent walking and standing on a construction site
- Climb intermittently
- Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch to perform duties
- Regularly reach above shoulder level
- Regularly push/pull objects
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift, push, pull and/or carry at least 25 pounds occasionally, and sometimes heavier weight
- Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness
- Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment
- Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach and grasp with hands and arms
- Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination
- Good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus
Education / Experience
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One (1) year experience working as heavy equipment operator
- One (1) year experience operating a loader
- Active Driver’s license
Work Environment
- Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration
- Handles various toxic products such as epoxies, grouts, sealers, paints and cleaners, with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
