About the role

The Pipe Layer Trainee is trained in the classroom, on-the-job, and while assisting other Construction personnel. The trainee must successfully complete all required classroom and field training, written and proficiency testing during or prior to the end of a 24-month training period to become eligible for advancement to the position of Pipe Layer.

Schedule

  • Full-Time
  • 1st Shift, Mon–Fri
  • Work shift may be extended during weekdays; may also include weekends and call-outs

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Minimum of 1 year prior construction experience (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license (must maintain while employed)
  • Class A CDL License with no restrictions and tanker endorsement (must obtain and maintain within 90 days of hire)
  • Hearing (audiogram) testing upon hire
  • Covered under Department of Transportation Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule; must acquire and maintain qualifications for all covered tasks
  • Covered under Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provisions (post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up, and return-to-duty testing)
  • Pre-employment and/or post-offer physical demands screening
  • Pre-employment Background Check & Drug Screen

Responsibilities

  • Install and repair pre-stressed concrete, steel, plastic, or iron gas and water mains, gas services and drips, gas and water valves, and hydrants
  • Excavate ground using equipment, tools (picks, shovels, spades, probe rods), or by hand to locate and excavate underground piping systems and facilities
  • Prepare and join pipes and fittings to ensure proper fit and function
  • Backfill, tamp, and restore excavations to proper compaction and original condition
  • Direct traffic with flags to safely divert traffic away from work areas
  • Operate a variety of District equipment and vehicles, including trucks with manual transmissions
  • Perform the physical requirements of the position
  • Assist crew members as directed to ensure work is completed effectively and in accordance with established procedures and standards
  • Maintain and clean equipment and tools to keep in good working order
  • Perform a variety of other duties as assigned
  • Understand and comply with all District policies and procedures

Skills

  • Efficient written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Familiarity with personal computers, tablets, and electronic devices, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP)
  • Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required

Physical Demands

  • Constant standing, walking, moving/traversing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching
  • Frequent bending/squatting, ascending/descending ladders, lifting/carrying materials up to 100 lbs without mechanical assistance, pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs of force, and working in confined spaces
  • Occasional overhead reaching, climbing, and reclining to reach areas
  • Constant use of hands for handling, grasping, and feeling tools and materials
  • Constant communication (talking and hearing)
  • Constant repetitive motions and coordination
  • Frequent neck and trunk rotation for visual field
  • Frequent use of machinery (e.g., jackhammer, pneumatic paving breaker, tamper) and measuring tools
  • Frequent hand shoveling and use of spades/probe rods
  • Work in all inclement weather and on uneven terrain
  • Work in close quarters such as excavated sites below ground level and vaults
  • Load and unload company vehicle with equipment and materials
  • Drive company truck to and from worksite (constant sitting, grasping of steering console, and neck rotation for visual field)

Work Environment

Field: Work inside and outside in all weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time.
