About the Role
The Pipe Layer is responsible for assessing ground conditions, digging trenches, assembling pipes, and laying pipes in accordance with city ordinances. Additional duties may include removing old piping systems, sealing joints, and installing auxiliary lines.
Responsibilities
- Measuring and configuring pipe routes.
- Gathering material and installation tools.
- Digging trenches using hand and machine trenching tools.
- Locating installed piping systems using magnetic or radio indicators.
- Removing old or broken piping systems.
- Laying pipes into trenches and applying pipe spacers.
- Checking pipe alignment and sealing pipes with cement glue.
- Installing auxiliary lines.
- Sealing exposed pipe joints and fittings.
- Filling and sealing pipe trenches.
- Performing other duties as required and/or assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum High School diploma or GED.
- Proven work experience as a pipe layer.
- Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe fitting techniques.
- Knowledge of sewer systems, storm drains, and water mains.
- Experience with machine-operated trenching tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and city maps.
- Excellent physical fitness with the ability to lift heavy objects.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 or more years of experience as a pipe layer.
- Experience in water line construction and/or water utility industries.
- Spanish/bi-lingual.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This job operates in a field environment and routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. Work may occur in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
- Physically active role with frequent lifting required; must be able to bend, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Precise hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
