About the role
Serve as an Apprentice Mate (Steersman) on an inland waterways towboat. Learn towboat handling and channel navigation procedures, particularly in navigating the towboat and its tows. Stand a regular watch and assist in piloting and navigating to develop basic skills and abilities. Operate controls governing navigation of the vessel. Move empty and loaded barges, shift fleet barges and plant, line up tow and secure for pick-up by tender.
Requirements
- Lifting of at least 40 pounds required.
- Background investigation may be required for appointment.
- Drug testing position.
- Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels upon Western Rivers USCG license required.
- Master of Towing Upon Western Rivers license required within 2 years of entrance on duty.
- Pre-employment and annual physicals required.
- First Aid and CPR training required.
- Valid Driver's License required.
Qualifications
- US Citizen required.
- Experience in relevant field preferred.
- Ability to perform tasks associated with engine room machinery and equipment including main propelling engines, pumping engines, auxillary pumps, machinery on the vessel and attendant plant and electric/electronic systems.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Physical effort required, including standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions.
- Work involves exposure to varying climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, dangers involved in attending moving machinery, possible drowning from falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, and crankcase explosion.
