About the Role
This position supports field operations at marine project locations, focusing on crane operations for the construction or repair of marine terminals and dock facilities. The incumbent will work closely with the Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, Pile Driver Operator, Welders, Boat Captain, Laborers, and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons, upholding Orion’s core values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, all grounded in Integrity.
Responsibilities
- Assist in unloading and assembling crane or other hoisting equipment for piledriving activities.
- Unload and assemble piledriving hammer and leads.
- Handle various types of piling, including concrete pipe, H-piling, timber, and steel sheet piling.
- Fuel, lubricate, and maintain the piledriving hammer.
- Lay out piling locations from blueprints or site plans.
- Prepare sites for installation of concrete and wood structures.
- Prepare, position, and assist in driving piling.
- Assist with the installation of boom and hoisting cables on equipment.
- Employ construction rigging techniques (slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks) for crane hoisting tasks.
- Use hand signals to communicate with the Pile Driver Operator for safe load maneuvering.
- Set up power and hand tools for piling preparation.
- Use oxygen/acetylene welding torches to cut steel plates, pipes, and beams.
- Operate pneumatic power tools (drills, countersinks, tuggers) and gasoline chain saws for timber cutting.
- Dress and cap pilings post-driving and prepare them for superstructure.
- Build formwork for concrete structures and timber falsework for various structures.
- Perform additional piledriving duties as required by specific projects.
- Collaborate with Pile Driver Operators, Barge Foremen, Welders, Laborers, and other crafts persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
- Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve Company programs.
Requirements
- A minimum of two (2) years of crane rigging and/or operations experience on land and barges, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Understanding of basic functions and operations of pile hammers (diesel, air, hydraulic, and drop hammers).
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints or site plans for piledriving work.
- General knowledge of construction rigging (slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks).
- Commitment to observing and fulfilling all safety responsibilities, including stopping work for unsafe conditions.
- Compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies.
- Confidentiality regarding Company proprietary or trade secret information.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Capability to wear and properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes.
- Ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management.
- Capability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately.
- Ability to evacuate work areas promptly in emergencies.
- Physical ability to move across job sites, including boarding and disembarking work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights.
- Capability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for extended periods.
- Repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
- Climbing vertical ladders up to 40'-50'.
- Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
- Adapting to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
- Qualification and physical ability to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations.
