About the Role

The Albuquerque Zia SCI Center serves as a VA referral center for the Southwest region, serving approximately 400 SCI/D Veterans. The Center is affiliated with the University of New Mexico and has rotations for both medical students and residents (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation - Neurology - Internal Medicine - Family Practice).

Responsibilities

• Manage a patient panel for both inpatient and outpatient care, utilizing technology such as telemedicine to deliver comprehensive services.
• Participate in patient care using technology such as telemedicine, continuous improvement activities, and JCAHO compliance.
• Provide a full range of services, including the assessment and care of acute and chronic patients with Spinal Cord Injuries or Disorders (SCI/D).
• Participate in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary team members to enhance coordinated patient care.
• Ensure the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPAA policies.
• Engage in continuous improvement activities to maintain high standards of patient care and outcomes, aligned with the goals of the SCI/D Care Line.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Spinal Cord Injury.

Requirements

• Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
• Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs).
• In rare and unusual circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer, who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications warrant such action.
