Physician Radiologist

About the role

The Assistant Chief of Imaging Service at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) carries both clinical and administrative responsibilities. This position shares responsibility for the overall operation and performance of the Imaging Service and reports directly to the Chief of Imaging. The Assistant Chief is a supervisory leader, with supervisory duties assigned by the Chief of Imaging. Direct reports will include radiologists and may also include mid-level providers and other radiology staff.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a diagnostic radiologist, providing a full range of image interpretation, image-guided procedures, and patient care services within Diagnostic Radiology, and may also bring additional subspecialty expertise.
• Work with the Chief of Imaging Service to supervise on-board personnel, evaluate prospective new hires, oversee compliance with all applicable regulations, and assist the Chief in addressing patient and staff complaints, disciplinary actions, credentialing and peer-review issues, and inquiries and investigations from Congress, the White House, VA Central Office, and national investigative bodies.
• Formulate and implement general policies, procedures, standards, and goals and objectives for the Radiology Service that are consistent with, and supportive of, the mission of the VASNHS and VISN21.
• Interpret imaging exams including relevant exam comparison and correlation with clinical information in CPRS. Support patient care services with reports timely to the care being delivered with the method of communication appropriate to the level of clinical importance or acuity.
• Review exam requests for appropriateness, prescribe exam protocols, provide oversight of technical image quality, provide clinical oversight of medication administration, provide oversight and serve as resource for radiation and MRI safety, provide oversight and serve as resource for infection control practices.
• Integrate resources to provide current, optimal care: consult colleagues, research literature, maintain continuing education and other sources of current practice.
• Support academic affiliations in technologist, radiologic assistant, medical student, resident and other teaching programs that involve the Imaging Service. Provide clinical experience, cognitive development, and other aspects of effective teaching.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Supervisory and leadership experience.
• Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
