Physician - Psychiatrist (BHIP)

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities

• Apply accepted protocols for assessment of the individual presenting with altered mental status.
• Perform diagnostic description or formulation to guide appropriate acute and secondary treatment interventions.
• Provide psychiatric care according to privileges.
• Teach all of the services required in the practice of psychiatry to psychiatry residents.
• Aid in meeting all necessary performance measures, completing all necessary training in a timely manner, and keeping up with medical and administrative documentation as required.
• Attend departmental staff meetings, various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital.
• Assist residents and/or nurse practitioners in the process of evaluation and treatment of the psychiatric patient.
• Provide and assist in the process of documentation and cosign resident notes, indicating supervision and concurrence with each note.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Board certified in Psychiatry (preferred).
• Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
