Physician (Interventional Radiologist)

About the role

The Interventional Radiologist serves as a specialist in the Radiology Service performing basic and advanced interventional radiology procedures. This includes consultation and preparation in advance of such procedures and follow-up after performance of such procedures. The Interventional Radiologist also provides interpretations of diagnostic imaging procedures, including MRI, PET/CT, CT, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, and other diagnostic imaging studies.

Responsibilities

• Supervises, performs, and interprets interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including:
  • CT and U/S guided biopsies
  • Pulmonary angiography
  • Angioplasty and angiographic stenting
  • Paracentesis and thoracentesis
  • Biliary procedures, including percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage
  • Percutaneous nephrostomy and ureteral stent insertion
  • Gastrostomy, gastrojejunostomy, and balloon dilation of enteric strictures
  • Chemoembolization and TIPS procedures
  • RF ablations
  • Various tube and drain placements
• Represents Radiology in clinical conferences and multidisciplinary programs.
• Participates in Quality Management activities such as peer reviews, image quality, equipment reviews, and other activities as required.
• Participates in institutional committees and boards as required.
• Accurate documentation of procedures within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) as required by medical bylaws.
• Maintains required educational requirements, including BLS, SCLS certification, medical license, and certification as required by facility bylaws.
• Reviews imaging requests for appropriateness and provides protocols and oversight to radiology technologists and resident physicians.
• Coordinates patient care through effective communication with Primary Care practitioners at local and remote locations.
• Actively participates in resident noon lectures, morning reports, case presentations, and other educational activities.
• Provides direct patient care through face-to-face or telemedicine modalities.

Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• License: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program. Approved residencies include:
  • Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • One year of post-medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States under a full and unrestricted license.
  • Non-U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States under a full and unrestricted license, performing duties related to the position applied for.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting up to 35 pounds intermittently.
• Moderate carrying (15-35 pounds) intermittently.
• Lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices, except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care.
• Pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulders, walking, standing, kneeling, and repeated bending intermittently.
