Qualifications
- To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.
- Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
Preferred Experience
- Board certified in cardiovascular disease or interventional cardiology
- Board certified or eligible in electrophysiology
Physical Requirements
- Placement in this position is subject to meeting the physical requirements of this position
- Pre-placement medical examination is required
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Overton Brooks VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full-time permanent board certified/board eligible Cardiologist (Interventional Cardiologist)
- Clinical duties will focus on arrhythmia management
- The physician should demonstrate the ability to work well with a large - diverse - and dedicated patient care staff
- The position includes a faculty appointment at the affiliated Louisiana State University Health and Science Center commensurate with qualifications
- Duties will include clinical practice - and teaching Cardiology fellows - residents - and medical students
- Other responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Performs inpatient or outpatient cardiovascular consultation services
- Standard diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures temporary pacing and permanent device (Pacemakers - Loop recorders - AICD and bi-ventricular devices) implantation - direct current cardioversions - electrocardiogram interpretation - Holter monitor and ambulatory rhythm interpretation
- Serves as academic faculty for cardiovascular fellowship training program
- Provides medical consultative services and chart review for quality assurance purposes or risk management
- Performs other duties as assigned within their scope of practice
- Research experience and interest desirable
- Teaching responsibilities as assigned and approved - including effectiveness in teaching - monitoring and coordination of educational activities including planning - evaluating - and documenting
- This physician will perform history and physical examination - evaluate problems - and define the appropriate therapeutic approach
- This physician will see outpatients in the outpatient clinics at the Overton Brooks VAMC
- This physician is responsible for support - cooperation - and participation in meeting the goals and objectives of the Medical Care Cost Recovery Program
- This includes assuring the cooperation of subordinates in performing tasks which may directly or indirectly contribute to the accomplishment of the MCCR collection goals and the fulfillment of the requirements of Public Laws - VA Directives - legislation - and local initiatives which govern the MCCR program
- Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m- 4:30 p.m. - Monday through Friday (On call as required)
