PHYSICIAN - Hospitalist - Duluth, MN/Virginia, MN

Hospitalist positions available in Duluth and Virginia, MN, covering Essentia Health facilities with a team of 58 physicians and 17 NP/PAs.

About the Role

• Duluth, MN: Coverage at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center (350-bed tertiary care hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center) and Essentia Health Duluth (140-bed multispecialty hospital with acute dialysis, medical-surgical, psychiatry, and outpatient surgery units). Facilities are connected via an indoor skywalk.
• Provision of secondary and tertiary care to patients from northern Wisconsin, north-central, and eastern Minnesota.
• Friendly, collegial environment with day teams of hospitalists and advanced practice providers, day and evening admitters, and a dedicated nocturnist team.
• Team-based collaborative model with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
• Open ICU (no ventilator management in Duluth).
• Target staffing model: 16-18 patients per day for physician-only rounding teams; 24-28 patients for shared APP and physician teams.
• Procedures not required.
• Opportunities to participate in hospital-based research, quality, and clinical initiatives.
• Inpatient teaching service for Duluth Family Medicine residents.
• Epic Electronic Medical Record used system-wide.
• Virginia, MN: Coverage at Essentia Health Virginia Hospital (30-bed hospital, Level IV Trauma Center, Stroke Ready facility).
• Staffing model: 1 physician and 1 APP on days; 1 dedicated physician nocturnist.
• Average team census: 14-28 patients, including admissions.
• Hospitalist-run ICU with ventilator management required for 24-48 hours; critical care and subspecialty consults accessible via phone or telehealth.
• Full laboratory and radiology services (MRI, CT). Additional inpatient services include General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedic Surgery, and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Schedule

• Typical 7-day on, 7-day off schedule throughout the year; 175 shifts considered full-time.
• Flexible scheduling with day, evening, and night rotations.
• Weekends and holidays required; no call obligation.

Requirements

• Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine.
• Board Certified/Board Eligible in Family Medicine with strong interest and experience in hospital-based care (mentorship available).

• Duluth, MN: Population 90,000; regional service area 490,000.
• Virginia, MN: Population 9,400; located 60 miles north of Duluth.

Pay

$348,103 - $383,262, depending on shift locations. Additional compensation may include bonuses, quality incentives, or production-based compensation.
