About the role
The physician will manage patients with ongoing hematology/oncology conditions, inpatient and outpatient, in collaboration with other services of the CGVAMC.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive patient care in the form of consultative inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology patient care at the Charles George VAMC Asheville, NC.
- Manage patients with ongoing hematology/oncology conditions, inpatient and outpatient, in collaboration with other services of the CGVAMC.
- Accountable to the Chief of Oncology/Hematology and to the Chief of Medicine section for the most effective delivery of care in services within Medical Service.
- Perform procedural skills including EKG interpretation, lumbar puncture, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy, intrapleural chemotherapy, intraperitoneal chemotherapy, intravenous chemotherapy and venipuncture.
- Share after-hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation.
- Consultative input to outpatient and inpatient care. Collaborate with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation.
- Administer administrative tasks such as participating in educational programs for section personnel as well as the medical staff, monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care, and fulfilling special projects.
- Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.
- Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
- Attend Hematology/Oncology team meetings and Medicine Service monthly staff meetings and COS quarterly meetings as per bylaws.
- Complete medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
- Participate in Medical Staff committee assignments.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Oncology/Hematology, Chief of Medicine or designee (i.e., Administrative Officer).
- Participate in, and attend, CME activities and VA continuing educational activities.
Qualifications
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Board Certified in Hematology/Oncology is required.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
Pay and Benefits
- Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.
- 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME).

- Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm (Monday-Friday) Full-time.
