Physician (Associate Chief of Staff of Pathology & Laboratory)

About the role

The Associate Chief of Staff/Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (ACOS/P&LM) has overall responsibility and accountability for implementation and maintenance of new and established policies and for providing overall direction in the continuing operation of the service line. The incumbent monitors and ensures medical staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, The Joint Commission standards, College of American Pathology (CAP) accreditation requirements, and other appropriate regulations.

Responsibilities

• Makes decisions regarding the operation of the service line, including oversight of and regular visits to all laboratories in each of the Salisbury Healthcare System sites of care.
• Monitors and ensures medical staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, The Joint Commission standards, College of American Pathology (CAP) accreditation requirements, and other appropriate regulations.
• Directly and indirectly supervises an interdisciplinary staff of physicians, laboratory technologists and technicians, phlebotomists, and other clerical and support staff.
• Oversees care provided by pathologists and laboratory staff, including quality assurance review of accuracy of pathologists' diagnoses; selection of qualified personnel, and additional administrative processes.
• Creates and approves policies for the continued improvement of processes.
• Provides direct patient care in reading surgical and cytology slides as needed.
• Coordinates care in all areas of the P&L Service including the HCC's and CBOC; oversees care provided by pathologists and laboratory staff.
• Leads continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality, access and staff satisfaction.
• Initiates interdisciplinary team activities to achieve optimum interdepartmental cooperation to assure the quality patient care is maintained or improved.
• Participates in multiple hospital, VISN and national committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital.
• Serves as chairman of Blood Utilization, as well as Chairman of Laboratory Quality Assurance Committee.
• Is responsible for the progressive improvement of the service delivery, which include programmatic participation in initiatives within the facility.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Board Certification: Must be Board Certified.
• Strong Management Experience in a Pathology & Lab setting: Preferred Experience.
• Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
