Physician Assistant - Per Diem

About the role

Under general supervision, guided by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP), and in collaboration with the Department of Neurology faculty, the incumbent provides direct care through physical assessment and medical intervention to patients in the Neurocritical Care Center (NCC). The Physician Assistant (PA) performs specific neurological examinations and general physical examinations based on advanced academic and clinical training in neurology. The PA manages the provision of care related to IRB biomedical protocols in the NCC and works collaboratively with research staff in the development and conduct of research, as well as the dissemination of research findings through written publication, professional meetings, and community programs.

The PA functions pursuant to a practice agreement through the Department of Neurology and is responsible for maintaining policies and protocols set by the CIDP and Medical Director of the Medical Staffing Department. The role includes participating in teaching activities and supervising the medical practices of fellows, residents, and students under the guidance of the Neurology faculty.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care through physical assessment and medical intervention in the NCC.
• Perform specific neurological examinations and general physical examinations.
• Manage care related to IRB biomedical protocols.
• Collaborate with research staff in the development, conduct, and dissemination of research findings.
• Function under a practice agreement with the Department of Neurology and maintain policies and protocols.
• Participate in teaching activities and supervise fellows, residents, and students.
• Perform invasive medical procedures including central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, and lumbar punctures.
• Operate specialized medical equipment such as intracranial pressure monitoring devices, central venous pressure monitors, neuroelectrophysiological machines, pulmonary respirators, cardioverters, defibrillators, transducer systems, and medical computer systems.
• Prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.

Requirements

• Advanced expertise in the standard practices of neurocritical care.
• Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
• Skill in clearly communicating medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and on the telephone.
• Advanced knowledge of medical history-taking and skill in performing it efficiently.
• Advanced knowledge of when specific diagnostic tests are indicated according to written protocol.
• Skill in performing diagnostic tests according to protocol.
• Advanced skill in reading medical instruments, editing data for errors, and making necessary corrections to treatment modalities.
• Ability to perform invasive medical procedures and monitor for indications and complications.
• Strong writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes.
• 2 or more years of neurocritical care or related experience.
• Experience in the ICU, preferably with Neurology and Neurosurgical patients.

Qualifications

• Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board as a physician assistant.
• National Provider Identifier (NPI) or ability to obtain one prior to employment start date.
• Current DEA Registration with schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5, and State-issued prescribing authority (if applicable).
• National board certification by the NCCPA at the time of initial appointment.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification from an AHA-approved course.

Special Conditions

• Initial applicant must provide documentation of provision of care (# and type of cases/procedures performed) during the past 24 months, representative of the scope and complexity of the privileges requested.
• Applicants must meet the legal requirements to practice as a PA in the State of California.
• Ability to provide teaching/education activities to a broad range of people including fellows, residents, medical students, and community members.

Pay

USD $122.45/Hr.
