Physician Assistant - Orthopedic Hospitalist

Inpatient-only role with a 7-on/7-off schedule (Tuesday–Monday), 12-hour shifts.

About the role

The PA Inpatient Medicine is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider who renders direct patient care, possesses delegated prescriptive authority, and is credentialed and privileged. The Advanced Practice Provider delivers medical care within the scope of practice delineated by the supervising physician, primarily managing patients in a hospital setting through rounding, admissions, and discharges.

Responsibilities

• Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing comprehensive or problem-focused examinations and obtaining medical histories.
• Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and healthcare needs.
• Prescribe, recommend, or employ medical drug therapies, therapeutic treatments, and procedures in accordance with approved protocols, focusing on efficacy, safety, and cost.
• Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
• Formulate and implement comprehensive, outcomes-based patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based medicine, standards of care, and collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
• Evaluate patient responses to healthcare and the effectiveness of care.
• Counsel patients and families on medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion.
• Counsel patients about drug regimens, side effects, and interactions with other substances (e.g., food supplements, OTC medications, herbal remedies).
• Maintain detailed records of patient treatment plans and outcomes.
• Initiate consultations and referrals when problems exceed scope of practice or expertise.
• Provide consultation-level services for conditions related to the provider’s specialty and training.
• Perform invasive procedures within scope of practice and competency as delegated by the supervising physician.
• Conduct hospital rounds, assist with admissions and discharges, and provide on-call support.

Requirements

• Knowledge of techniques to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties, and preventive healthcare measures.
• Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
• Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in using computers and related software applications.
• Ability to develop and implement comprehensive, outcomes-based patient treatment plans.
• Ability to counsel patients on medical conditions, treatment plans, and behavior modification.
• Ability to interpret and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
• Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Texas.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Less than one year of experience.
