PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT IV - FULL TIME-SPINE -NEUROSURGERY

About the Role

Evaluates, examines, diagnoses, and treats patients in collaboration with their supervising or substitute supervising physician according to established guidelines and protocols. Maintains and promotes patient well-being through preventative healthcare and guidance. Provides care in both hospital and outpatient settings, including weekends and shift work. Includes surgical first assist responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Collects patient assessment data systematically, focusing on physical, psychosocial, age, cultural, and spiritual needs.
• Performs systematic physical exams and documents history of present illness in the medical record within established time frames.
• Involves patient, family, and other healthcare providers in care as directed by individual physician practice.
• Prescribes appropriate medications based on patient condition per state prescriptive authority guidelines and Excela Health Allied Health Committee.
• Demonstrates leadership, problem-solving, and accountability in professional practice.
• Functions as a resource person, patient advocate, and preceptor for new employees.
• Assists in maintaining or decreasing organizational costs and completes annual competencies.
• Ensures compliance with state, JCAHO, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies; participates in surveys, inspections, and non-punitive medication reporting.
• Manages patient safety, including adherence to infection control processes, standard precautions, and National Patient Safety Goals.
• Utilizes two forms of patient identification before implementing care and assumes appropriate code team roles during emergencies.
• Performs procedures, assists in surgery, and provides pre- and post-operative care per established guidelines.
• Positions patients, preps and drapes surgical sites, and assists surgeons while maintaining sterile techniques.
• Performs suture removal, dressing changes, and patient rounds as directed by the supervising physician.
• Orders and reviews labs, diagnostic procedures, and communicates critical results to the supervising physician.
• Develops discharge planning, dictates summaries, and provides patient/family education.
• Interviews, evaluates, and assesses patients in clinic settings, adjusting treatments and medications as indicated.
• Collaborates with the treatment team to achieve desired outcomes and documents all care in the medical record.
• Participates in performance improvement activities, chart reviews, and initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
• Adheres to hospital and physician practice policies for patient safety and infection control.

Requirements

• Ability to perform essential physical functions as outlined in attached Physical Conditions and Working Conditions charts.
• One year of medical/surgical experience within the past five years (preferred).
