About the role

This role is an integral part of the care delivery system, providing specialty and critical care healthcare services primarily in an inpatient setting for acute or chronic health conditions in specific populations. The position works within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice, adhering to the policies, values, and mission of the organization. This role requires 24/7 coverage, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts, with specialty certification and advanced procedures as needed.

Schedule

12-hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends. Typical need is 3 shifts per 6-week schedule, with flexibility to increase based on demand. Employees are expected to provide 6 shifts of availability per schedule, including a minimum of 3 weekend shifts. Off shifts (night, weekend day, weekend night) are prioritized. Shift examples: 6/7A-6/7P, 6/7P-6/7A.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 24/7 staffing of the Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit, assisting attending physicians in managing a busy L&D unit, including triage, admissions, cervical checks, cesarean sections, vaginal deliveries, postpartum/antepartum rounds, and gynecological consults.
  • Provide comprehensive, evidence-based patient care for acute patients within an inpatient setting, including daily rounds, medical history and physical assessments, treatment plans, diagnostic test interpretation, and discharge planning (30%).
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic studies to determine patient treatment plans and establish medical diagnoses within the scope of practice (10%).
  • Collaborate proactively with attending physicians and interdisciplinary teams to develop and refine patient care plans, seeking consultation for decisions beyond the PA-C scope (10%).
  • Institute emergency measures, treatment, and stabilization for acute patient situations such as cardiac arrest, hemorrhage, or shock (10%).
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for medical coding, billing, and regulatory compliance (10%).
  • Facilitate communication and coordination among patients, families, community health services, and the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care (10%).
  • Assess patient and family learning needs, providing culturally sensitive and age-appropriate education on conditions, treatment plans, and self-care strategies (10%).
  • Maintain mandatory continuing education, participate in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, and adhere to organizational mission and privileges (10%).
  • Perform hospital rounds, execute physician orders, and fulfill other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current PA Physician Assistant License; PA-C or board-eligible.
  • Four to ten years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ongoing successful recertification (NCCPA) as a PA-C within 90 days of hire.
  • Drug Enforcement Agency Licensure within 60 days of hire.
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association).
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate, Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate, and Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a Physician Assistant in a specialty or procedure-based setting (preferred).
  • Training commitment: at least 1 shift per week for a minimum of 8 weeks (personalized training duration determined per candidate).
