Physician Assistant Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Nocturnist

Cardiac Surgery PA position working 13-hour nights in the cardiac surgery ICU and step-down units, 3 shifts per week, working with cardiac surgeons and ICU staff. The BWH Cardiac Surgery Service is a 24/7 PA-run service; rotation of weekends and holidays is required.

Responsibilities

• Assess and manage various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation
• Provide direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
• Perform complete histories and physical examinations
• Order, interpret, and evaluate appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
• Develop appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
• Order medications and write prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
• Consistently provide high-quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries
• Perform bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population

Qualifications

Education

• Master's Degree in Physician Assistant required (experience cannot substitute for degree)

Licenses & Credentials

• Physician Assistant State License — Massachusetts required

Experience

• 2+ years of experience as a PA preferred; outstanding new graduates or candidates with less than 2 years of experience will be considered

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients
• Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings
• Ability to maintain quality control standards
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
• Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
• Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public

Pay

• Starting annual base salary for inpatient cardiac surgery tier PA: $143,874 (Grade 7)
• Night shift bonus: $20,000 shift commitment bonus for nocturnists, paid as two semi-annual lump-sum payments for participants working a minimum of 1,500 night hours annually

• 13-hour night shifts, 3 shifts per week (40 scheduled weekly hours)
