Brief Description of Duties
- Affords assessments of the physical and psychological status of patients via interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
- Identifies deviations from normal in physical assessment; collaborates with physicians to formulate treatment plans for health issues and follow-up care.
- Writes prescriptions for medications and blood products based on laboratory results, diagnostic studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care according to established protocols.
- Reviews findings and determines eligibility for participation in clinical trials.
- Collaborates with other healthcare team members, solicits consultations from physicians and other healthcare professionals as needed.
- Interprets and evaluates findings from diagnostic studies.
- Communicates appropriate actions to facilitate and implement therapeutic plans consistent with the ongoing care needs of the patient.
- Administers therapeutic measures and obtains specimens as necessary.
- Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement in the delivery of care.
- Dictates or writes patient history, admission notes, care plans, progress notes, discharge notes, and follow-up letters.
- Assists in managing family dynamics and coping mechanisms throughout the acute and chronic phases of the patient’s care.
- Triage’s patients appropriately and provides emergency treatment as necessary.
- Considers the physical, emotional, social, and economic status, as well as cultural and educational backgrounds of individuals, families, and communities when providing care.
- Ensures adherence to departmental and interdepartmental policies, procedures, and standards of care, and informs supervisors or nurse supervisors of actual or potential problems requiring administrative resolution.
- Contributes to the nursing profession through publications, committee involvement, and development of educational media or creative approaches to improve patient care.
- Educates patients and families about the disease process and treatment.
- Provides information to patients and families regarding symptom management and the psychosocial response to cancer and its treatment.
- Identifies the learning needs of the nursing and medical staff and students and implements educational programs as appropriate.
- Provides formal and informal education to the nursing staff.
- Acts as a preceptor for graduate nursing students.
- Participates in the development of clinical pathways and educational materials.
- Provides consultation to community groups and professional groups.
- Identifies, analyzes, and resolves patient care problems, leading to system improvements or improvements in patient care.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement/organization operating procedure activities.
- Demonstrates a commitment to continuously improving the quality of care provided to patients.
- Applies current concepts and principles from research to practice settings.
- Initiates changes in clinical practice based on findings of research or quality improvement projects.
- Participates in multidisciplinary clinical research activities; participates in clinical trials and acts as a patient advocate.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant studies; or
- Bachelor's degree and completion of a Physician Assistant Certification Program recognized by the New York State Education Department.
- Physician Assistant Certification to Practice in New York State.
- One year of experience required. Oncology preferred.
- BLS required.
Salary
$120,000-$140,000 annual
