Responsibilities
- Patient Consultations
- Aid the plastic surgeon during new patient consultations.
- Review patient medical histories, concerns, surgical goals, and relevant health information.
- Perform patient assessments and document findings in the electronic medical record.
- Educate patients about surgical procedures, recovery expectations, potential risks, and postoperative care.
- Answer patient questions while reinforcing the surgeon’s recommended treatment plan.
- Cook up with the patient care team to support a seamless consultation experience.
- Preoperative Care
- Conduct or assist with preoperative appointments and medical evaluations.
- Review medical history, medications, allergies, laboratory results, clearances, and surgical instructions.
- Confirm that required documentation, testing, consents, and medical clearances have been completed.
- Provide detailed preoperative education and ensure patients understand how to prepare for surgery.
- Communicate any medical concerns or changes in patient status to the supervising surgeon.
- Assist with surgical planning, documentation, prescriptions, and coordination with the operating room team.
- Surgical First Assist
- Serve as first assistant during plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures.
- Aid with patient positioning, sterile preparation, draping, tissue retraction, exposure, hemostasis, suturing, closure, dressing placement, and other intraoperative responsibilities within the Physician Assistant’s scope of practice.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and support an efficient, safe surgical workflow.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, surgical technologists, and other clinical team members.
- Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique, infection-prevention protocols, and patient safety standards.
- Participate in surgical counts, documentation, specimen handling, and operating room protocols as required.
- Postoperative and Follow-Up Care
- Conduct postoperative and follow-up appointments under the direction of the supervising surgeon.
- Evaluate incisions, swelling, bruising, pain levels, drains, dressings, and overall healing.
- Remove sutures, staples, drains, or dressings when clinically appropriate and authorized.
- Identify potential complications and communicate concerns promptly to the surgeon.
- Provide patients with recovery instructions, activity restrictions, medication guidance, and incision-care education.
- Document patient progress and update the supervising surgeon regarding recovery.
- Support patients throughout the healing process with compassionate, timely, and professional communication.
- Clinical and Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely patient documentation.
- Review and respond to patient messages and clinical questions within established protocols.
- Aid with prescription management and medication refills as permitted.
- Participate in clinical meetings, surgical case reviews, training, and quality-improvement initiatives.
- Help develop and maintain standardized preoperative and postoperative care protocols.
- Follow all HIPAA, OSHA, infection-control, and patient-privacy requirements.
- Represent 22 Plastic Surgery with professionalism and contribute to a positive, collaborative workplace culture.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current Physician Assistant license, or eligibility for licensure, in the State of Utah.
- Current NCCPA certification.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS certification or willingness to obtain it.
- Ability to obtain hospital, surgical facility, or operating room privileges when applicable.
- Strong clinical assessment, documentation, communication, and patient-education skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both clinical and surgical environments.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment.
- Previous experience in plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, general surgery, dermatology, ENT, or another surgical specialty.
- Previous first-assist experience.
- Experience with postoperative wound care, drain management, suture removal, and complication recognition.
- Familiarity with aesthetic breast, body, and facial procedures.
- Experience working in a private surgical practice or ambulatory surgery center.
- Proficiency with electronic medical record systems.
