About the role

The Physical Therapist (PT) at Carilion Outpatient Therapy is responsible for confirming and interpreting physician referrals, performing patient assessments, and planning and implementing individualized treatment programs. They also coordinate patient care, document in the medical record, and collaborate with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Confirms and interprets physician referrals, performs patient assessments, and plans and implements individualized patient treatment programs.
  • Provides patient care based on physician referral and age-appropriate assessment, considering the patient's developmental/chronological age and medical diagnoses.
  • Collaborates with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers, and students to achieve efficient clinical activity and quality patient care.
  • Documents in the patient’s medical record and completes other patient care-related forms in compliance with regulatory agencies and department/hospital policies and procedures.
  • Supervises Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) as provided by State of Virginia licensure/practice standards and Federal regulations.
  • Orients new employees and may provide guidance to volunteers, students, support, or contract staff.
  • Communicates with patients, families, therapists, Clinical Team Leaders, managers, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
  • Participates in other patient care and departmental/professional activities as requested/assigned, including but not limited to presenting/attending in-services, performance improvement, program development/evaluation, new employee orientation, committee membership, peer review, and attending staff meetings.
  • Delivers the best in customer service and patient care, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and other employees.
  • Champions Carilion's mission, vision, and values; complies with the policies and procedures, ethical standards, and code of conduct set forth by the company.
  • Works with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers, and students to achieve efficient clinical activity and quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of approved school of Physical Therapy. Bachelor's degree as Physical Therapist and 5 years of experience, OR Master's or Doctorate degree required.
  • Experience: Experience in site specific level of care preferred but not required. For Home Health positions one year of clinical experience required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy.
  • AHA BLS-certified (from a Carilion approved program) within six months of employment.

  • Effective interpersonal, communication, customer service, and teamwork skills required.

Skills

  • Knowledge of principles of life span growth and development.
  • Ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status.
  • Ability to interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs.
