About the role

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Operations Support, Office of Laboratories and Scientific Services, located in Guaynabo, PR; Donna, TX; Memphis, TN; Anchorage, AK; Otay, CA; Long Beach, CA; and Newark, NJ.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving samples submitted for analyses
  • Performing preliminary examination of the samples
  • Writing test reports and briefings
  • Articulating technical findings, interpretations, and conclusions
  • Providing general advice to CBP employees on sampling and sample storage procedures

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service
  • All pre-employment processes will be conducted in English
  • You may be required to pass a background investigation
  • CBP follows the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures
  • Your conduct will be subject to the ethics rules applicable to all Executive Branch employees, and to CBP employees specifically, as well as the criminal conflict of interest statutes

Qualifications

  • Basic Requirements: You must provide supporting documentation in your application to show you meet the basic requirement of having a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science.
  • Education Substitution: One year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree may also substitute for experience required at this level.
  • Combining Experience and Education: When combining education with experience, the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for the grade level.

Pay

The starting salary for this position is $50,460.00 (GS-7, Step 1) to $80,243.00 (GS-9, Step 10) with promotion potential to $116,362 (GS-12 Step 10).
