PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN.
Responsibilities
- Develop, administer, and review course materials, training aids, and qualification examinations involving radiological control requirements.
- Survey naval nuclear propulsion program work to assure radiological control training materials and qualification examinations reflect current practices and procedures.
- Act as a major radiological control representative in dry-run planning, practice, or mock-up sessions in preparation for major repairs, overhauls, or refueling operations.
- Review radioactivity control-related plans and procedures to assure that radiological controls are adequate for anticipated and actual on-the-job conditions.
- Assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments involving numerous processes in high-skill-level trades (e.g., pipefitting, welding, machining, and rigging).
- Recommend changes to work plans and trades procedures to improve radiological controls, correct deficiencies, increase efficiency, minimize exposure to radiation, and prevent nuclear incidents.
- Determine and execute appropriate actions to contain and control radiation, mitigate effects, and regulate personnel movement in the area.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
- Current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level (time-in-grade requirement).
- Appointment of retired military members within 180 days of retirement to a civilian position is subject to provisions of 5 U.S. Code 3326.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes) continuously during work shifts.
- Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals).
- Must participate in medical surveillance programs.
- May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites. Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
Qualifications
For the GS-11:
- One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
- Specialized experience must include analyzing nuclear propulsion plant work to identify discrepancies and develop new methods or procedures to maintain radiation and radioactivity control levels.
For the GS-10:
- One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
- Specialized experience must include monitoring nuclear propulsion plant work to assess radiological control methods and procedures for deficiencies or non-compliance to recommend corrective action.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills.
