About the role

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program designed to help newly arrived refugee youth succeed in the New York City public school system. NYSA provides academic, creative arts, physical education, and other classes to students aged 5–21 from over 20 countries. The program includes field trips on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in mandatory school programing.
  • Participate in instructional planning sessions, trainings, and all program meetings.
  • Create and lead physical education classes for elementary school students, focusing on team sports and game play.
  • Foster students’ social-emotional development and build a strong sense of community.
  • Collaborate with Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and staff in planning and reviewing student progress.
  • Engage in instructional coaching cycles and participate in weekly meetings.
  • Pending demand, provide early and/or after-care supervision to a cohort of students.
  • Review student progress and make instructional adjustments as needed.
  • Substitute as needed for colleagues' classes.
  • Complete All Staff Survey to provide feedback on NYSA.
  • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching group sports programming required.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in physical education or related field strongly desired.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners strongly desired.
  • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds strongly desired.
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is strongly desired.
  • Strong relationship building and classroom management skills strongly desired.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style.
  • Strong team player who is self-directed and organized.
  • Strength in cultural humility-building.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required.
  • Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian).
