Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and teach a developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum that aligns with district and state standards.
- Teach a variety of physical activities, including but not limited to, team sports, fitness exercises, gymnastics, and recreational games.
- Assess students' motor skills, fitness levels, and social interactions during physical activities and provide feedback to students and parents.
- Modify activities for students with special needs to ensure full participation and success.
- Establish and maintain effective classroom routines and procedures to ensure a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies to minimize distractions and maximize student engagement.
- Emphasize the importance of physical fitness, health, and wellness through practical demonstrations and discussions.
- Encourage students to set and achieve personal fitness goals.
- Monitor student progress and provide support and feedback for individual improvement.
- Ensure students’ safety during physical activities and games by providing proper supervision and addressing any safety concerns.
- Educate students about the importance of injury prevention and warm-up exercises.
- Enforce safety rules and guidelines in all physical activities and sports.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate physical activity into daily routines and support students’ overall development.
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding students' progress, challenges, and successes in physical education.
- Attend staff meetings and contribute to the school's overall mission and initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field.
- Current and valid Illinois State PEL with PE K-Grade 12 endorsement.
- Prior PE teaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of child development and physical education curriculum and best practices.
Skills
- Strong communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to create engaging and inclusive lesson plans.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and promote teamwork.
- CPR and First Aid certified (or the ability to obtain certification).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to engage in physical activities and demonstrate exercises.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies for physical education classes.
- Willingness to be active and on your feet for extended periods of time during class sessions.
Work Environment
- The position requires both indoor and outdoor physical activity.
- The teacher will supervise students during physical education classes, recess, and sometimes extracurricular activities such as sports teams or after-school fitness programs.
