About the Role
Under general supervision, assist teachers in providing instruction to individuals or groups of students in a classroom or playground environment during specific segments of physical education.
Requirements
- High school graduation or its equivalent
- Must pass basic high school competency test
- Ability to speak and write effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Learn procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties
- Work effectively with young people in situations requiring poise and patience
- Perform strenuous physical activities
- Analyze situations accurately and make judgments without immediate supervision
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships
- Perform general clerical work
- Work calmly under pressure and with frequent interruptions
Qualifications
- Salary Range 16: None or a limited number of units OR completion of 15 semester units of a varied academic program OR completion of 30 semester units of a varied academic program, 15 of which must be education courses or related subjects
- Salary Range 18: An AA Degree (60 semester units or more, 30 of which must be education courses or related subjects) or 60 units of education courses
- Desirable: Experience working with school-age children in an organized setting
- Knowledge of general needs and behavior of children; basic elements of child growth and development including physical growth and development; recreational games
- Ability to communicate in Spanish
- Possession of valid California driver license
Responsibilities
- Instruct students, including special needs children, in physical education skills and activities, using and adapting lesson plans prepared by a physical education teacher
- Supervise playground and physical education activities
- Administer teacher-prepared tests and assess measurements of student development
- Set up and arrange supplies and equipment
- Perform a variety of clerical and record keeping activities which may include taking roll, filling out forms and applications, and correcting papers
- Prepare bulletin boards and displays as instructed
- Perform other duties as required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time
- Ability to ascend and descend sloping grounds and/or steps
- Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids
- Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels
- Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation
- Ability to bend and twist, kneel and stoop
- Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and up to 40 pounds occasionally
- Ability to reach in all directions
- Ability to be outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather (hot, cold, windy)
- Physical dexterity in limbs and digits to demonstrate and participate in strenuous physical activities
Schedule
192 days (Student days only) - 192 Day Work Year Calendar
Monday - Friday, 6 hours/day, times to be determined
Pay
Hourly salary ranges from $19.66 to $26.40, depending on placement in Ranges 16 or 18. Salary is prorated based on start date and prior experience.
