About the role
To develop students' physical skills and abilities; to develop students' understanding of the importance of exercise related to physical, mental, and social well-being; and to motivate students to work towards physical fitness, proper hygiene, and good health.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Develops and administers Physical Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives
- Teaches knowledge of, and develops skills and abilities in movement patterns and motor skills; concepts related to health, physical fitness, and the value of physical activity for a lifetime
- Develops students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and appropriate feedback to regarding student progress, expectations, and goals
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws
- Assists in coordinating extra-curricular activities, including student performances and assembles
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents
- Sets and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees
- Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records
- Inspects equipment and field areas used to ensure they are in good and safe working order
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent
Equipment
- This position may require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine
- Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use
Travel
- Limited travel may be required
Physical And Mental Demands
- Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, twist balance, stoop, climb steps, reach overhead, lift up to 20 pounds
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of current physical education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education
- Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
- Ability to organize and coordinate work
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
Interrelations
- Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
- Working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
- Working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
- Understanding and responding appropriately to customer needs and maintaining a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
- Interacting with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and providing quick, responsive customer service
Qualifications
- Kansas State Certification as a Physical Education Teacher required
- Valid Kansas Driver's License required
- Bachelor's Degree required
